BRIEF HISTORY

Although an effective health system is fundamental to the development of any nation, a lot of person around the planet do not have any access to health care services even in industrialized countries. In the third world countries, the situation is worse because most of the population is deprived of basic physiological services for their survival, especially in rural areas. Haiti is one of those countries where the access to health services is very difficult and almost nonexistent for those living in countryside.

aware of the problem, a group of Haitian professionals composed of Dr. Jean Gardy Marius, Dr. Sterman Toussaint, Dr. Guidner Bien-Aime and others toured the whole country to see, analyze and provide an effective solution to this problem.

After traveling several points of the Haitian provinces by the mid-2007, to mitigate this problem; this group  has decided to take action based on the definition of health according to the world health organization. This definition states: “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (http://www.who.int).

At the end of 2007, the group organized informally its first mobile clinic in the locality of Rousseau, near Montrouis, a remote area of Arcahaie, around 100 kilometers north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Due to the impact of the mobile clinics in various zones, we decided to found a legal and formal organization.

So in March 8, 2008 was founded the non-profit “Oganizasyon Santé Popile” (OSAPO), English translation is (Popular Health Organization); in order to contribute to alienate to future generations an Haitian society that can successfully lead the fight against infectious and contagious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases; and equipped with health facilities that can serve the entire population, especially the needy without prejudice under any circumstances.

Currently, the organization has its first health center in the locality of Rousseau offering the services of nutrition, outpatient, internal medicine, gineco-obstetric, pediatrics, dermatologic and general surgery. We hope that we will be able to build more facility in other remote area with the help of our partners.
